If you've ever wandered into the maze of stone-paved alleys that wind up through Naxos Old Town toward the Kastro, you already know that shopping here feels nothing like a retail experience. It feels like discovery. Archways lead to hidden courtyards, family-run boutiques tuck themselves beneath centuries-old walls, and every shop has a story behind it. This is our guide to the best shopping in Naxos — written from the inside.
Start at the Kastro
The Kastro quarter is what Naxians consider the most authentic part of Naxos Chora. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century, it has winding streets lined with some of the most interesting small shops on the island. This is where you'll find handmade jewellery, Cycladic marble art, ceramics, leather goods, and gifts that actually reflect the island rather than a generic souvenir stand.
We are based here ourselves — Tereza's Greek Concept Store sits in the alleys of the Old Town. Tereza designs and makes the jewellery herself, right here on Naxos; each piece inspired by the Aegean, the Cycladic tradition, and the island light. Alongside the handmade jewellery, you'll also find summer women's dresses in lightweight fabrics ideal for exploring the Cyclades, Naxos marble sculptures, tote bags, and gifts from Greek designers and island makers. If you're looking for something made in Naxos, by hand, this is where to start.
Bring home a taste of Naxo.s
No visit to Naxos Old Town is complete without stopping for local products. Naxos Cheese Koufopoulos is one of the island's most beloved spots for authentic Naxian dairy; their graviera and arseniko cheeses are produced on the island and have been a staple of local life for generations. Just as essential is K. Tziblakis, a longstanding local shop packed with Naxian cheeses, wines, herbs, and traditional goods that locals and visitors have been returning to for years.
For something distinctly Naxian to drink, head to Promponas near the port — the place for kitro, the island's signature citrus liqueur made from the leaves of the citron tree, which grows almost nowhere else in Greece. A bottle makes one of the most authentic souvenirs you can take home from Naxos.
What to look for when shopping in Naxos
The things Naxos does best: handmade jewellery made by local designers, Cycladic marble sculptures, ceramics, local food products, summer dresses, kaftans and linens perfect for island life, and woven textiles. The island has a deep tradition of craftsmanship; the same marble quarried here 5,000 years ago for Cycladic figurines is still being carved by local artisans today.
Practical notes
Most shops in Naxos Old Town open from around 9 am to 2 pm and again from 5 pm to 10 pm. Many close for a few hours in the afternoon, particularly outside peak season. The best shopping in Naxos happens on foot; wear comfortable shoes, leave the agenda behind, and let the alleys lead you.
